This is a one-year Top-up Degree for those able to follow it on a full-time basis, to enable suitable students with 'intermediate' level qualifications or their equivalent to build on previous work and gain an honours degree. Given that it is intended to build on, and continue, the work-based learning characteristics of foundation degrees, it may well be that most students who are able to benefit from the applied programme will undertake it on a part-time basis. Thus many students might study over a two-year period, for example. This course builds on business management knowledge from previous studies to provide the necessary business expertise required of future managers and professionals.

Course Structure

The Top-up Degree is based on a modular structure, with a core of compulsory modules covering management decision making, business strategy, entrepreneurship and marketing. This is combined with two, work-based learning modules, both intended to be based on activity in your own workplace. This will enable greater specialisation in specific sector areas, depending on your occupational background. You will, in effect, study 50% of the course based in the workplace, thus reducing the time required to attend campus-based modules.

What you need to join the Course

The normal entry requirement will be a foundation degree or HND award passed with a merit profile in a cognate subject acceptable for entry to the specific honours pathway. Depending on previous studies, you may also be required, following an individual interview, to complete additional 'bridging' studies prior to enrolling on the Top-up Degree in order to cover identified gaps in previous learning.

It is also required that you must be engaged in suitable and approved work activity prior to commencement. This, again, is part of the work-based learning rationale and orientation of the course. This should be an area for discussion with the Programme Manager at interview.

Career Opportunities

Many graduates will anticipate progression in their employing organisations, and an honours degree is an essential ingredient in career development. The course also aims to equip you to use your business training, and in-depth knowledge of specialist areas to pursue a career in business, nationally or internationally. Also potentially available are consultancy and advisory positions with government and international private agencies, public administration and trade or labour organisations.
