Over recent years, the management of farm livestock has undergone considerable change with the adoption of new technologies and increasing accountability within the food chain. The industry requires enterprise managers who are familiar with modern livestock systems and production techniques and who have the appropriate skills to deal with future business challenges.

Course structure

In addition to the core agricultural modules (see table below), this course offers specialist modules in applied animal science and advanced animal production and an associated 20-week work placement.

The first year of the course introduces you to the scientific principles that underpin and inform commercial livestock production which includes some laboratory experience. Complementary to this is an understanding of the management techniques used in support of intensive and extensive systems of production appropriate to a range of livestock species.

Detailed consideration is given in year two to enterprise analysis skills required to understand the components of a successful livestock business. Student placement choices in recent years have included practicing management skills on livestock units, securing work in leading research institutes and employment with the UK’s leading agricultural consultancy organisations.

The final year provides opportunity for you to explore in-depth topical issues affecting the livestock sector - supported by specialist high profile speakers and industry visits - including a focus module called Advanced Livestock Production.

Modules throughout the course are concerned with the scientific basis of animal production systems, their potential through improved management to meet the requirements of consumers for animal products, the sustainable use of natural resources, the avoidance of environmental pollution, and the enhancement of animal welfare.

The livestock enterprises on our farms are a great learning and teaching resource. The livestock specialism over the three years of study is supported by business, mechanisation, marketing, elective choice and other agricultural core subject modules which, together with an integrated farm tendering exercise and research project, provide you with a thorough insight into sustainable livestock production.

Placement

All Agriculture (Hons) courses feature a 20-week relevant work placement in year two, following completion of the Easter Term examinations and, additionally, the option of a full year in employment between years two and three. This is closely tailored to suit the chosen degree award identity and the final year research project. Past students have secured a wide variety of challenging work experience opportunities, both nationally and internationally. The educational value of these placements should not be underestimated; such experience helps in the development of a range of skills that are appropriate for future employment and such contacts and networking can prove invaluable.

What you need to join the course
