This pathway is subject to validation.

This pathway allows you to focus on the management of one of the most valuable resources in the world, one that is increasingly considered to be either badly degraded or under great threat. Fortunately, interest is reawakening in managing this resource, both from agriculturalists and from naturalists, and this new pathway is one of very few currently available in the UK.

On this pathway, you will study the following focus module and any two others (in addition to the five core modules) and carry out a research investigation within this theme:

Sustainable Management of Soil and Water

This module evaluates the traditional management strategies for soil and water as factors in food production and applies sustainable principles to their use and management in various agro-climatic zones. Soil is considered in terms of physical, chemical and biological properties in relation to nutrient cycling processes, structural quality, and risk of erosion and contamination. Water in agriculture links climate and hydrology to water collection and use, crop requirements, water balances, water quality and risks of salinisation, drainage and leaching, and water conservation techniques.
