Harry Potter Day

Key Stage: 2

Location: RAC based

The day focuses on raising awareness and aspirations. Robed in wizard’s gowns, students are taken on a magical campus quest to reveal information about student life, university accommodation, courses and careers. The drama lessons inspire confidence and achievement as pupils try acting and spell casting, culminating in a presentation to their classmates. Following lunch in the ‘Great Hall’, the day concludes with a magic show from the Professor, whose mind-reading magic leaves pupils awe-struck.

Transition Programme - Professor Fluffy

Key Stage: 2

Location: School and RAC based

We have recently joined the highly successful Professor Fluffy Programme. Professor Fluffy supports the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum in literacy, numeracy, ICT and PSHE. The Professor Fluffy programme aims to raise awareness of higher education and to equip the students and parents with the tools required to succeed as lifelong learners.

The programme includes two interventions from the College; the first intervention would be based in school and would take no more than two hours. The second intervention would be based at the College; parents/carers will also be invited to attend. In addition, Professor Fluffy’s online resources allow pupils to extend their learning, at school and at home.

Field to Plate Day

Key Stage: 2

Location: School / College based

Students will study food production and plant science. Students will learn the importance of healthy eating, and about the nutrients needed, to grow and stay healthy. They will develop an understanding of the challenges they will face as lifelong learners, and be equipped with the tools to face them.

The day is split into four carousel sessions. Up to 60 students can attend on one day.

HE Experience Day

Key Stage: 3 and 4

Location: RAC based

Students spend the day with an ambassador, the day covers a range of aspects including; student finance, routes into higher education, careers and types of courses available to study at higher education. This day can be tailored to meet the needs of individual learners. Also included is a tour of the campus and the opportunity to eat in our dining hall, along with our students.

Subject Enrichment Day

Key Stage: 4 and post 16

Location: RAC or other location based

Students discover the links between their current subjects, university and careers beyond university. This is a chance for students to gain added depth in a subject by working with academic staff. The activities can be designed to fit with National Curriculum and exam board specifications, for both Key Stage 4 and Post 16 education. Past enrichment days have included; Geography, Journalism, Business and Food/Catering (this list is not exclusive). Our enrichment days aim to:

  • Raise achievement
  • Raise awareness of progression possibilities in subject areas
  • Further learning as extended projects
  • Support students in specific projects.

Enterprise Challenge: The Great Jam Challenge 2012

Key Stage: 4

Location: School and RAC based

*New for Spring 2012*

The Great Jam Challenge will commence on Friday 27th April and is being run by the College’s Enterprise Coordinator Katy Duke. Teams will be supported by a mentor who will be a university student, and there will also be support from Young Enterprise South West and NACUE. The aim of the challenge is for teams to design a brand, develop a sales strategy and pricing plan and then sell their product to make a profit! Teams will present to a panel of judges on Tuesday 10th July. A team should consist of 5 students and we would like you to encourage students who meet our widening participation criteria to join a team. A school/college can enter more than one team. The challenge aims to:

  • Raise achievement
  • Raise awareness of progression possibilities in subject areas
  • Further learning as extended projects
  • Support students in specific projects and enterprises.

Information Advice and Guidance (IAG)

Key Stage: 3, 4 and post 16

Location: School / College based

We are happy to provide information, advice and guidance to students, parents/carers and teachers through attending:

  • Careers events
  • Assemblies or PHSE education sessions
  • Parents and/or options evening
  • Inset days

We can offer advice on student finance, learning journeys and pathways into HE, choosing the right course and institution, UCAS application process and how to write a personal statement, and University life – how to make the most of the first year.

Skills for Life

Key Stage: 4 and post 16

Location: School / College based

Skills for life sessions typically last for 45 minutes and empower students in their journey to become lifelong learners. Our sessions can cover the following:

  • Better essay writing
  • Exam preparation and study skills
  • Public speaking and presentation skills
  • Interview techniques and motivation and resilience techniques

Access to Higher Education

Key Stage: Post 16

Location: School / College based

We can provide sessions and workshops to equip students with the right tools to be able to access and succeed in higher education. A typical session will last 45 minutes, our workshops include:

  • Learning journeys and pathways into higher education
  • Choosing the right course and institution for you
  • UCAS application process and UCAS personal statement writing
  • Student finance
  • Student life and surviving the first year of university

Uni Bites Summer Schools 2012

Key Stage: 4

Location: RAC based

Uni Bites are the Summer Schools that The Royal Agricultural College is running post Aim-higher. This summer we will be running three Uni Bites Summer Schools all three will have a focus on land-based careers. Students will have the opportunity to learn about land-based careers, through academic sessions and field trips. Furthermore, students will discover university life first hand and will understand how they are able to progress to higher education and overcome barriers such as finance.

We aim by the end of the summer school, for students to have improved self-confidence, made new friends, and be able to make an informed choice about university and have lots of fun. Students who attend must be in Yr11 (15/16 years old) and meet our targeting criteria. The Summer Schools run from Wednesdays to Friday.

  • Uni Bites Summer Challenge South West runs from the 27th – 29th June
    (25 places available to students in the south-west).
  • Uni Bites Summer Challenge runs from the 15th – 17th August
    (25 places available to who have experienced care the UK).
  • Uni Bites Summer Challenge for Boys runs from the 29th – 31st August
    (25 places available to male students in the UK).

There is no charge for eligible students to attend a Uni Bites Summer School. For more information on our Summer Schools please go to the Uni Bites section of our website or alternatively email outreach@rac.ac.uk.

All our activities and visits are provided free of charge – we provide the catering on all our campus based visits.
