Actionbioscience is a non-commercial, educational website which provides articles and resources on issues related to environment, biodiversity, biotechnology, evolution, genomics. The site is well-designed, with information arranged under broad subject headings. 

AEBC (Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission)

Site for the Government's advisory body on biotechnology issues affecting agriculture and the environment. Particularly useful are the reports that can be read, printed or downloaded.

AECB (Association for Environment Consious Building)

ThE AECB is an independent environmental building organisation formed in 1989 that encourages environmental awareness within the building and construction industry.

AgEcon Search

AgEcon Search is a searchable database of full-text copies of scholarly research in the field of agricultural economics. It can be searched by any words used in the citations or abstracts and full text is available in pdf format to red, print or download. The site is maintained by the University of Minnesota.

Agricola

Internet version of a database of journal articles and books on agriculture and related subjects, gives access to bibliographic records not full text. The database is produced by the American National Agricultural Library and was created in 1970.

AgriFeeds

AgriFeeds is a service that allows users to search and filter news and events from several agricultural information sources. It's a "one-stop shop" on recent news and upcoming events related to agriculture.

AGRIS

Database of reference to articles, books, reports and theses on agricultural science & technology, produced by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The database covers material from 1975 onwards and can be searched by keywords. Advanced search options mean you can combine terms, truncate words, and specify the part of the record your terms relate to e.g. title, author or series. The site also contains the CARIS database and link to other FAO and external databases.

A portal for research students and academics. It promotes academic discussion and socialising worldwide. 

ANPA (Association of National Park Authorities)

ANPA is the Association of National Park Authorities. It includes links to the web pages on all the UK's national parks and details of publication, as well as news/events.

Arkive

The Arkive website is the Noah's Ark for the Internet era - a unique global initiative, audio-visually profiling British wildlife and the world's endangered species. It features firms, photographs and audio recordings. Arkive's online species profiles include scientifically authenticated fact-files and links to further information services and relevant conservation organisations.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is the UK's leading funding agency for academic research and training in the non-clinical life sciences. The website provides detailed information on research grants, strategic objectives, research initiatives and programmes, business and innovation, publications, media releases, news and events.

BBSRC Food Security

BBSRC Food Security website, produced by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is focusing on issues relating to food security. It includes information on current research, facts and figures, news/events, downloadable pdf publications and a blog.

BEFRED

BEFRED is a free website sponsored by the British Equestrian Federation. It includes a fully searchable database of abstracts of research carried out by undergraduates, postgraduates and post doctoral researchers into equine topics. It also contains contact details if you wish to view research in full. Some of the work has been peer-reviewed and if the work has been published in a Journal, there might be a link from the Abstract page direct to the Journal.

BPEX (British Pig Executive)

British Pig Industry site where you can find downloadable papers and other relevant materials such as articles, press releases, statistics, news and events. 

Best for Business.com

Best for Business is a free gateway to business information on the web. It also produces its own guides, action plans and factsheets.

Beyond Green

Beyond Green is a new interactive website providing information on sustainable development to housing, regeneration, lifestyle, sustainable communities and current projects. 

BiologyBrowser

Biology Browser, produced by BIOSIS, is a portal offering resources for the life sciences information community. BIOSIS databases add hundreds of thousands of new citations each year and hold well over 13 million total citations going back to 1969. The site also has links to current news stories and relevant web sites. You can search by subject, geography and organism.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is the leading funding agency for academic research and training in the biosciences at universities and institutes throughout the UK.  Results of BBSRC-funded research impact upon a broad range of technologies designed to improve food safety and quality, diet and health, crops and livestock, agricultural sustainability, the design of new drugs and vaccines, environmental clean-up, pest and disease control, animal health and welfare, and biochemical engineering. 

Biz/ed

A site offering free teaching resources in business and economics for lecturers, teachers and students. The site contains a searchable internet catalogue, access to primary resources and teaching/ learning materials, data sets, company facts and a virtual economic model. Maintained by Bristol University.

Black Grouse UK

This website is designed for anyone who wants to learn about black grouse and help this special bird. There is information about research, projects for birdwatchers, shooters and links.

Bluetongue disease

This website has been launched by animal health company Intervet and is dedicated to bluetongue in the UK. Aimed at providing information to both farmers and vets and contains details about the vaccine, the spread of the disease and links to other organisations involved with the disease.

British Equestrian Federation

Site of UK organisation concerned with British equestrian sport. The site includes news and information about the organisation and events.

British Horse Society

UK organisation site containing information about the BHS, events, access issues, training, safety and clubs.

British Property Federation

The British Property Federation website is the trade association of the property industry representing owners and investors in commercial and residential property. Includes details of membership, current activities and links to other property related organisations. The 'what to do' section contains some downloadable documents.

British Trees

A Woodland Trust website dedicated to British trees, with lists and descriptions of tree varieties. 

Building Conservation

This site aims to be an information centre for the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, churches and garden landscapes. There are a number of online articles organised by subject, plus listings of useful books and courses. 

Business and Biodiversity Resource Centre

This website aims to provide information and practical advice that businesses need to engage with biodiversity issues. The website includes information on: what biodiversity is and why it matters; relevant UK legislation; biodiversity's value to business; how to formulate a company biodiversity action.

Business Link

Business Link is a free business advice and support service, available online and through local advisers. There are available case studies and lots of information on finance, tax, ideas, IT, sales, marketing and international business. Each region of the UK has its own office, which can be found by typing in you postcode.

CCAFS (Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security)

Website of a leading professional marketing organisation.  The Resources section in particular contains some very useful free materials on marketing (case studies, "10 minute guides", marketing links etc).

Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM)

The CIWM is the professional body for waste management which represents over 5,500 professional members.  The site includes links, publications (some free to download) and events.

Center for Biological Diversity

The Centre for Biological Diversity is dedicated to protecting endangered species and wild places through science, policy, education and environmental law. The site includes information on programs, species, press releases and events.

CIAT (International Centre for Tropical Agriculture)

Home page of the Latin American research organisation which works on conservation of natural resources and improving food supply. The site includes press releases, research information and details of publications.

CIEL (The Center for International Environmental Law)

CIEL is a non-profit environmental law organisation founded in 1989 which provides information on environmental law and policy around the world. Areas include: climate change, biodiversity, trade, human rights and the environment, law and communities. It also has a list of publications, many of which can be downloaded as pdf documents. 

CIFOR (Centre for International Forestry Research)

CIFOR is an international research and global knowledge institution committed to conserving forests and improving the livelihoods of people in the tropics. The website contains publications, events, jobs, reports. You can download text in four languages (French, English, Japanese and Spanish).

International Research Organisation consisting of 16 research centres (including CIAT). The organisation aims to help food security and alleviate poverty. The site includes links to publications and information about research work and members.

CLA (Country Land and Business Association)

Home page of the Country Land and Business Association, an association concerned with the interests of private landowners and rural businesses.

CLARINET (The Contaminated Land and Rehabilitation Network for Environmental Technologies in Europe)

Website for this programme which provides information related to contaminated land management in Europe. Includes details of their working groups and research. Also outlines the approach to contaminated land in European Countries.

Compactlaw

Compactlaw was formed to provide concise and independent legal information to consumers and business customers.  The legal content is written by a team of barristers, solicitors and academics.  The free legal information section includes a number of factsheets on topics such as Employment, Housing, Consumers etc. 

ContaminatedLand

The focus of this website is contaminated land . It includes details on standards, guidelines, legislation, regulations and causes of contamination. The design of this site is rather idiosyncratic.

Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Cotswolds became an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1966. The main purpose is to conserve, protect and enhance the natural beauty of Cotswolds. The site has links, publications news/events and press releases. 

Commission for Rural Communities

The Commission for Rural Communities website provides access to rural issues such as housing, transport, social inclusion and rural enterprise. The website describes its work and governance, gives access to downloadable publications, reports and news, events and blogs and provides links to other relevant resources.

Countryside Council for Wales

UK Government organisation home page with information about the work of the CCW and jobs and publications as well as press notices. 

Countryside & Community Research Unit (CCRU)

The CCRU, one of the leading specialist rural research centres, provides information on research projects in agriculture and the environment, rural community development, environmental planning, rural leisure and rural society. The site also contains CCRU news and conferences, useful links and publication.

Countryside Recreation Network (CRN)

CRN is funded by a range of Government Departments, Agencies and other bodies. This website gives access to information on countryside and related recreation matters. It includes links, information about events and publications as well as the electronic "Countryside Recreation" journal.

Cultural Heritage Preservation and Conservation Database

This website is described as a 'search engine' dedicated to subjects such as cultural heritage, restoration and maintenance of architecture, and preservation of the urban landscape. Although search terms can be submitted to a search or met-search engine, the site also provides a useful browsable directory of websites organised by category and sub-categories. English and Italian versions are available.

The Core Historical Literature of Agriculture

The site is a collection of full-text agricultural publications from the early 19th century produced by Cornell University. The collection covers topics including agricultural engineering, soil science, animal science and human nutrition. The texts can be searched or browsed using the options at the bottom of the screen. The simple search option uses the asterisk"*" to truncate works and quote marks" " to search for specific phrases. Advanced search enables you to do Boolean searches using AND (all words must be present for a match, OR (any of the word can be present), NOT (the word must not be present and also proximity searching to specify that a word appears within a specified number of words from another.

Directgov provides access to a wide range of government information and services.  You can browse by interest group or by topic.  Alternatively you can use directories or the search engine provided.  It replaces what used to be called UKonline. 

Directorate of Biological Sciences

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) website provides information and support for academic research on plant biology, environmental biology and biodiversity. It also includes reports and news/events.

This site provides abstracts of a number of published dissertations.

e-unwto

The e-unwto is an online,  fully indexed and  cross-searchable interactive database offering a vast number of high-quality UNWTO publications including books, journals, and statistics in their respective languages. In addition to more than 900 books in English, French, Spanish, Russian or Arabic, the e-unwto also provides access to a growing number of documents which can be defined as “Gray Literature”. The website has information on statistics presented as "Tourism Factbook" and an e-alert service.

EBLEX (English Beef and Lamb Executive)

The EBLEX website provides up to date Market prices, free downloads when you register (free of charge) and event. Also it includes information on Food Service, Retail and the Better Returns Programme for English Sheep Producers.

Ecolex

Ecolex is gateway to environmental law. It is operated jointly by FAO, IUCN & UNEP. It includes information on literature, court decisions, National Legislation and treaties. You can search by subject, keyword and country and get direct access to the abstracts and indexing information for each document as well as to the the full text of most of the information provided.

EFFP (English Farming & Food Partnerships)

Website of an independent organisation whose aim is to strengthen the profitability, competitiveness and sustainability of England's farming. It is easy to navigate and includes membership information, press releases, newsletter and links.

EGFAR

EGFAR is the GFAR (Global Forum on Agricultural Research) website which promotes discussion of strategic issues in agricultural research for development and the sustainable use of natural resources. It has useful links, news/events.

Eldis

ELDIS is a gateway to Information sources on development and the environment. It includes subject resource guides arranged by subject such as agriculture, biodiversity, finance policy, globalisation, education etc. which offer access to key documents, organisations, research themes, discussion and other key resources. The site also includes links to related internet resources, country profiles and news/events. This excellent site is easy to navigate and is aimed at students, researchers and academics.

ENDS (Environmental Data Services)

ENDS is an organisation which was launched in 1978. It specialises in environmental information for managers, policy makers, regulators, lawyers, campaigners and lobbyists. The site includes limited access to the ENDS Reports, to an Environmental Consultancy Directory, environmental news/events and useful links to environmental resources on the web.

English Heritage

English Heritage is the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment. This web site gives details of publications and leaflets available as well as general information on their conservation work.

English-Wine.com

Commercial site providing information on English and Welsh wine for producers and consumers.  The site includes a listing of vineyards and information on the history and varieties of wine.

English Wine Producers

Site of the marketing and promotions association in the UK wine trade.  The site includes information about grape varieties, vineyards and wines, as well as news stories about production and marketing. 

Environmentalresearchweb.org

The Institute of Physics has launched a new website which covers all aspects of environmental science topics. The site has links to new articles from the open access journal Environmental Research Letters, a comprehensive database of organisations and an up-to-date events calendar. Registration for membership of environmentalresearchweb is free.

A web site that promotes care for the environment. Topics include Recycling & Environment, Alternative energy, Ethical Investment, Environmental Education, Composting and Climate Change. It offers many reference sections and numerous quality photographs.

EurActiv.com

EurActive.com is a well-designed portal to European Union Information including news and policy positions.  The site can be browsed by Policy Section, by date or by keyword (simple and advanced search options).  

Europa

EUROPA is the portal site of the European Union.  It provides up-to-date coverage of European Union affairs and essential information on European integration.  Users can also consult all legislation currently in force or under discussion, access the websites of each of the EU institutions and find out about the policies administered by the European Union.

Europabio

EuropaBio is an association of European biotech companies.  It includes details of membership, links, press releases, EU projects on biotechnology, facts and figures and events.

Europe Unit

The Europe Unit is a sector-wide body which aims to raise awareness of the European issues affecting UK higher education and to coordinate the UK's involvement in European initiatives and debates.  It has links, news and information on European mobility programmes.

European Environmental Law Homepage

This site contains material relating to European environmental law, including full text of cases and legislation. It includes full text of the environmental treaties ratified by the EC, links, and conference news.

European Information Association

The European Information Asscociation (EIA) is "an international body of information specialists whose aim is to develop, co-ordinate and improve access to EU information".  The Association's homepage provides feature articles on a variety of topics, links to websites related to EU information and publications. 

European Information Network in the UK

The site provides a gateway to European information for the UK regions.  There also links to EU news, EU links and a 'library' of downloadable full-text documents. 

European Wind Energy Association (EWEA)

EWEA promotes the utilisation of wnid power in Europe and worldwide. The web site includes, reports, statistics and press releases.

FAI (Food Animal Initiative)

Food Animal Initiative was founded in 1998 and is committed to raising animal welfare standards, tackle environmental concerns and address issues of human health. The website contains links, publications (freely downloadable as pdf documents), events as well as projects.

FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations)

Home page of the Italian based organisation which deals with agriculture, food supply and development issues. As well as in information about the work of the FAO, the site has press releases and information about jobs. 

Farming Futures

This website provides news, links, information and video case studies for farmers seeking to face the challenge and opportunities resulting from climate change. The site is a collaboration between the Forum for the future, the NFU, the Agricultural and Horticultural Research Forum, and the Country Land & Business Association (CLA), Defra, and the Agricultural Industries Confederations. There are a number of fact sheets which aim to explain impacts of climate change and outline ways of adapting farming methods to cope.

Fisheries Research Services

This is a Scottish site which includes pages for the Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory and the Marine Laboratory Aberdeen.  The site includes press notices, details of current research and information on specific topics such as marine monitoring, coastal data sources and fish stocks.

FindAMasters.com

FindAMasters is a guide to MBA, LLM, MSc, MA, Med, MRes, and MPhil programmes in the UK. 

Find a PhD

FindAPhD.com is comprehensive guide to current scientific research and PhD studentships. Its scientific database contains details of research topic from many major universities and institutions throughout the UK and Ireland. This database can be searched by keyword, institution, city and subject area. Subjects covered include: Life, Chemical, Physical and Earth Sciences; Engineering; Computing; Mathematics.

FINWeb

FINWeb is a financial economics web site whose objective is to list internet resources that provide substantive information concerning economics and finance -related topics. Link are organised broadly by the following categories: Journals, Working Papers, Databases, other sites, and miscellaneous.

Flora Locale

Flora Locale is a UK non-profit organisation established in 1997 and its concern is to promote and advance the conservation and enhancement of native wild-plant populations and plant communities in relation to creative conservation and ecological restoration. The site includes updated resources produced by Flora locale related to conservation of native wild flora and its biodiversity as well as information on training programmes & events.

As well as plant library giving information about varieties, including growing conditions, there are also statistics and reports on the US Horticulture industry and recent news links.

Food Security Portal

The Food Security Portal has launched in 2010 and facilitated by IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute).  It contains wealth of data regarding the status of global food security. In addition, it provides a series of new beta tools designed to answer important research and policy questions, including how a country is affected by changes in the global prices of its export and import commodities.  It is an excellent resource with both graphical displays and databases.

Forest Stewardship Council

Site of a UK non profit organisation promoting responsible forest management including certification and labelling.  The site has information about current standards, links to organisations using the standards and also links to other sustainable forestry organisations. 

Forum for the Future

The mission of the Forum for the Future is to accelerate the building of sustainable way of life. The website includes information on publication, events, links.

Home page of a UK charity which promotes and educates people in the conservation of game and farmland wildlife. The site includes information about the organisation and its' work including press releases. Lots of guides etc to download.

getCITED

getCITED is a site that exists to facilitate the dissemination and discussion of academic research. At its core, it consists of two things: a database and a discussion forum. Its contents are decided by scholars and researchers. The database can be searched by Publication, Identity, Institution or Department. In each case you can opt for an "Assisted Search". The "Top 10" of each are also listed. 

GEO Reports

This page gives access to web versions of Global Environment Outlook, the United Nations Environment Programme Global State of the Environment Reports - a biennial environment assessment report series that reviews the state of the world's environment through identifying major environment concerns, trends, and emerging issues - together with their causes, impacts and societal responses - to provide guidance for international environmental policy formulation, action planning, and resource allocation.

Geosource

Geosource is Ultrecht University's collection of links to internet resources with information on subjects such as human geography, physical geography, planning, geoscience and environmental science. It includes links, list of journals arranged by subjects, links to organisations and statistical resources.

A free improved mapping service from Ordnance Survey.  You can search for maps anywhere in the UK by entering the place, name, postcode or grid reference.  You can then save, print or email the map image.

GIS.com is a a portal to GIS information on the web.  The site is intended to educate anyone interested in geographic technology on the value that technology brings to their day-to-day activities.  The site also provides GIS users with resources to help them in their work.

Organisation site. The HGCA sponsors and does research in cereals and oilseeds production in the UK and aims to improve marketing of the products. The site includes publications as well as information on research, markets and events.

HM Land Registry

This site contains information about the Land Registry, which keeps and maintains the Land Register of England and Wales. The site provides summary of average property prices (England & Wales) available by country, property type, comparison with previous year. Downloadable documents are also available in the publications section. 

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)

HMRC website contains free UK Trade Statistics enabling users to access information and identify new trade opportunities for products across the world.  The data is updated monthly and is available from 1997 to date.  The website also has an Alert service, links, statistical factsheets and news.

Electronic version of the UK magazine which contains equestrian sports news and reviews, a classifieds section, careers advice and information on related topics such as horse care and feeding. Searchable database of articles.

Intute: internet resources for agriculture, food and forestry

A free online service which identifies a range of web resources suitable for study, teaching and research at the HE/FE level and for practitioners. Coverage includes agricultural and livestock production, agronomy, soil science, food science and technology, fisheries, forestry, woodland management, sustainable development, land and water management, environmental impacts and meteorology. The service is created by subject specialists in a network of UK universities and professional organisations who select and evaluate the websites in our database and write descriptions of the resources.

IFAP (International Federation of Agricultural Producers)

Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS)

The Institute of Alcohol Studies is an educational body, independent of both the government and the drinks industry.  It aims to increase the understanding of alcohol and of public policies to reduce problems associated with alcohol misuse.  A number of its publication and journals are freely available on the website.

Institute of Animal Technology

The IAT was formed in 1950 and is a professional body in the field of animal welfare and promotes excellence in the care and welfare of animals in science.  It has publications, links and events.

International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC)

This is the site of a Netherlands based organisation which was developed by the International Union of Soil Sciences.  The site contains information about current research projects in areas such as sustainable land use and soil mapping. 

International Water Management Institute (IWMI)

The IWMI is a non-profit scientific research organisation focusing on the sustainable use of water and land resources in agriculture and on the water needs of developing countries. National Center for Agricultural  Law Research & Information

The National AgLaw Centre is the only American agriculture law research and information facility that is independent, and national in scope.  The website provides access to Centre publications and serves as a gateway to agricultural law resources on the Internet.  It contains the AgLaw Newsletter where you can find information about topics such as Biotechnology, Farms programs, Environmental Law, Pesticides, Food Safety etc. USDA decisions and AgLaw Links. 

National Land and Property Gazetteer

National initiative to create a gazetteer of geographical definitions and addresses, "BS 7666 spatial datasets for geographical referencing", specifies a standard format for holding details on every property and street.  The NLPG is used to automate the search aspect of the conveyancing process.

Naturepl is the online service of Natural Picture library (formerly BBC Wild). The site includes thousands of high quality nature images referring to the world's animals, plants and places. You can search by keyword and download pictures of varying resolutions for presentation.

NatureServe

NatureServe is a non-profit organisation which provides information about 50,000 world plants, animals and ecological communities of the U.S. and Canada.  You can search for biodiversity and conservation information by geographic area and by species or ecological communities.  The site also includes  information about the data used and some useful biodiversity related sites organised by topic.

Race to the Top is a collaborative project between an alliance of organisation and the major UK multiple retailers. Rainforest Action Network (RAN)

RAN's partisan website, was founded in 1985 and works to protect tropical rainforests and the human rights of those living in and around these forests.  The website, which has an obvious bias, also offers information about campaigns, facts sheets, annual reports and publications.

Reorb is the professional networking website dedicated to commercial real estate. Although free it requires registration. It includes a blog, events, research news and discussion groups.

 

ResearchGate

ResearchGate is a free professional network for scientists and researchers.  A useful resource which provides researchers with access to abstracts and full-texts, forums, methodology discussions, groups.  Researchers also can find out about conferences and hunt for jobs. Members can create their personal blog within the network, interact, exchange knowledge and collaborate with researchers of different fields.

 

RICS Foundation

Home page of this charitable foundation whose aim is to raise awareness about issues of concern within the built and natural environment both urban & rural. It has information on research projects, conferences and a wide range of publications, one of which can be downloaded. The portals section also included a series of links to other relevant websites.

Roslin Institute

Scottish research institute funded by BBSRC which works in the areas of genomics, transgenics and biotechnology, animal breeding, welfare and behaviour.  The site includes details of current research work, links to some research papers, news and careers information.

Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI)

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH)

SNH's site contains valuable information on conservation of natural habitats of Scotland and its wild fauna and flora.
